The Meat Standards Division of the Livestock and Livestock Products Board consist of two sub-divisions: Farm Assured Namibian Meat (FAN Meat) and Meat Classification.
The FAN Meat division manages the FAN Meat Scheme, which includes the maintenance of a Quality Management System (ISO 9001: 2015), desk-top and on-site audits of its members, development of standards, training and awareness creation in FAN Meat standards, Good Agricultural Practice and Animal Welfare and research into global trends to keep the Namibian Meat Industry aligned.
The FAN Meat division also conducts the following services on behalf of the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS): Registration of Stock Brands and the distribution of official cattle and small stock ear tags. This division also houses a NamLITS helpdesk, which assists producers with basic Namibian Livestock Identification and Traceability System (NamLITS) enquiries and functions. This division also manages the NamLITS online web interface on behalf of the DVS and also houses a data capture unit from time to time when the need arises.
The FAN Meat division works very closely in collaboration with the DVS in terms of procedures and policy development as well as on the compliance to standards, rules and regulations.
The Meat Classification division is mainly responsible for meat classification at export abattoirs across the country. Further to that, the division registers producers operating abattoirs in Namibia, which includes on-site and desk-top audits of producers, as well as training in basic slaughter technique and meat hygiene.
The Meat Classification division also conducts Export Quality Control at export abattoirs across the country.
The Meat Classification division also manages the Seal of Quality programme of the Livestock and Livestock Products Board, which includes on-site audits of applicants and members and the development of standards.
